What is a Doula?
The word Doula is of Greek origin meaning
'care-giver' and is pronounced " Doo-la ".
It has been translated to mean a woman experienced in childbirth who provides continuous physical, emotional and informational support to the mother before, during and after childbirth.
A doula assists the woman and her partner in preparing for and carrying out their plans for the birth. She is there to encourage and support the father as well as the mother.
A doula does not perform clinical tasks as she is not a medical professional. Her supporting role is to enhance the whole birth experience, to assist in retaining the memories of the ' main event' and to help create a smooth transition into parenthood.
A doula is able to offer uninterrupted support to the mother throughout her labour. She can offer a range of comfort measures, from massage to continuous reassurance and coping techniques.
The doula will know what the couple want from their birthing experience and is able to help ensure that the midwife implements her care accordingly.
